15th June 2018 The Bloomsday Dinner

The Bloomsday Dinner. A joint event of the Authors' Club and the National Liberal Club.  The narrative of James Joyce’s Ulysses, widely regarded as the finest novel of the 20th century, charts the fortunes of three Dublin characters during a single day: 16 June, 1904. Every year, devotees of the book celebrate the date by dressing up as Stephen Dedalus, Leopold and Molly Bloom, and tracing their adventures through the streets of the Irish capital.    We will celebrate Joyce’s masterpiece with a mouth-watering dinner, starring dishes that feature in its pages. Afterwards John Walsh, President of the Authors’ Club, will discuss the book’s unique celebration of hunger (and other appetites) while Michael Hughes, the Irish writer and actor, will read key passages of luscious Joycean prose, from breakfast to suppertime.  Members are encouraged to dress up as Leopold and Molly for the event: dark suits, bow ties, waistcoats and spectacles/ eye patches for the men, cotton blouses, full skirts and straw hats for the ladies. For inspiration, type “Bloomsday” into Google Images.   7.00 for 7.30pm  Ticket Price £55.00 includes reception and wines.
