Education Dinner - open all members and their guests.   Guest Speaker - Sir Peter Newsam - Former Chief Education Officer for the Inner London Education Authority and Chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality.  Former Director of the Institute of Education, University of London, where he helped lead the building of an extension which now houses the Newsam Library, later serving as Chief Schools Adjudicator who will speak on "How current trends in society will influence Education in the future".    7.00 for 7.30pm   Ticket Price £53.00 per person

31st October 2017 NLC Literary Circle

NLC Literary Circle.  "The Colour of Magic" by Terry Pratchett.  This novel is Terry Pratchett's maiden voyage through the bizarre land of Discworld. His entertaining and witty series has grown to more than 20 books, and this is where it all starts - with the tourist Twoflower and his hapless wizard guide, Rincewind ("All wizards get like that ... its the quicksilver fumes. NLC Literary Circle  "The Georgics" by Virgil.   [Virgil's] verse, descriptive and narrative, brings us the disappointments as well as the rewards of the countryman's year - round devotion to his crops, his vines and olives, livestock great and small, and the complex society of bees. Wednesday Luncheon Circle .  "The Question of Iran"     Speaker - Mr Masoud Ahmadi, an economist and IT consultant by profession, who is also a human rights activist concerned with the human rights situation in Iran and, becasue of the rulers of Iran, in the rest of the Middle East. Currently working voluntarily with International Liberty Association, a UK human rights charity that has been working to end executions and in particular execution of minors in Uran, he has also been heavily involved in the campaign that rescued Iranian dissidents stuck in Iraq's Camp Ahsraf and then Camp Liberty.       12.00 for 12.30pm    Ticket Price £26.00 per person

NLC Literary Circle    "CrocAttack !"  by Assaf Gavron    A darkly comic novel about the bizarre realities of life in Israel today.  "Why is everyone so paranoid in this country?  Can't dark guys get on buses with suit bags any more?"  Eitan Enoch  - "Croc" to his friends - is taking his usual bus to work in Tel Aviv one morning when a fellow passenger starts to worry about the dark-skinned man with the suit-bag sitting up at the front.  Thus begins a week of bloody bombings and bloodier reprisals, at the end of which Croc is transformed into an inadvertent national celebrity.  348 pages.  To be introduced by Janet Berridge.   6.00pm  No chagre to attend.
