We also thought we’d throw something else into the mix for our December book discussion to accompany our annual mince pies and Prosecco!

How many times, after reading features such as The Guardian’s ‘The books that made me’, have you been tempted to fill in the answers to many of these questions yourself? So have a think about the following and see where the discussion takes us.

What is the book that changed your life?

What is the book you wish you’d written?

What book do you think is most overrated?

And, finally:

What is the book you’re most embarrassed or ashamed not to have read?

20th February 2020 NLC Chess Circle - 4th Annual Lightning Chess Tournament

NLC Chess Circle - 4th Annual Lightning Chess Tournament

Chess players are warmly invited by the National Liberal Club Chess Circle to play in the fourth annual NLC Lightning Chess Tournament on Thursday 20 February 2020.

This will be a relaxed and enjoyable evening of lightning chess (in which moves are played alternately to a 10 second metronome buzzer). Each player will play around five games over the course of the evening. The winner will have their name etched on the glittering Ming Vase. We hope to welcome both NLC members and chess playing members from other Clubs. Players of all abilities welcome.

The tournament will start at 7pm sharp, with players encouraged to meet at the bar at 6.30 for refreshments. We will be dining afterward (a special set menu will be on offer).

A report of last year's event is here -  http://nlcchess.net/2019/03/07/lightning-never-strikes-thrice/

Entries can be taken on the night, but it would be helpful if prospective entrants would let Ben Widdicombe (bjwidds@googlemail.com) know they intend to play in order to get an idea of numbers which will in turn help with arrangements.
